N-乙基吡咯烷酮(NEP)是一种无色透明的液体,沸点82-83℃( 101.3Kpa)，相对密度 0.994g/cm3，折光率1.4665 ( 22℃)。是一种强极性的有机溶剂。具有髙化学稳定性、弱碱性、出众溶解能力、低蒸汽压及低介电常数。不会形成氢键，属于极性非质子传递溶剂，可以取代其他稳定性差、蒸汽压髙毒性大极易渗人皮肤的溶剂，被称为无毒超溶剂。

合成N-乙基吡咯烷酮的方法有吡咯烷酮法和γ-丁内酯法。吡咯烷酮法由于反应需要卤代垸烃参与并生产相应卤化物，同时卤代物对反应釜的选材也比较髙。γ-丁内酯法，由伯胺和γ-丁内酯缩合制得N-烷基-2-吡咯烷酮。该法收率相对比较高，但是工艺条件要求苛刻一些。

它可用作髙效选择性溶剂、催化剂及阳离子表面活性剂,亦可作为基础原料生产医药中间体。可用于精制油品及生产火药、医药、染料、农药、日化、涂料和耐热树脂等。

N-Ethylpyrrolidone (NEP) is a colorless and transparent liquid with a boiling point of 82-83°C ( 101.3Kpa), a relative density of 0.994g/cm3 and a refractive index of 1.4665 ( 22°C). It is a strong polar organic solvent. It has high chemical stability, weak alkalinity, excellent solubility, low vapor pressure and low dielectric constant. It does not form hydrogen bonds and is a polar aprotic solvent. It can replace other solvents with poor stability, high vapor pressure and high toxicity and can easily penetrate into the skin. It is called a non-toxic supersolvent.

The methods for synthesizing N-ethylpyrrolidone include pyrrolidone method and γ-butyrolactone method. The pyrrolidone method requires halogenated hydrocarbons to participate in the reaction and produces corresponding halides, and the selection of halides for the reaction kettle is also relatively high. γ-Butyrolactone method, N-alkyl-2-pyrrolidone is prepared by condensation of primary amine and γ-butyrolactone. The yield of this method is relatively high, but the process conditions are stricter.

It can be used as a high-efficiency selective solvent, catalyst and cationic surfactant, and can also be used as a basic raw material to produce pharmaceutical intermediates. It can be used for refined oil products and the production of gunpowder, medicine, dyes, pesticides, daily chemicals, coatings and heat-resistant resins.
