The determination of trace carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide requires the use of a hydrogen flame detector and a matching methane reformer to convert trace amounts of CO and CO2 into methane, which are measured with an FID detector and quantified by an external standard method.

It is very complicated to install a methane reformer on a finalized gas chromatograph. It is necessary to install both the gas circuit and the circuit. The instrument needs to be modified, time-consuming, laborious, and low-efficiency. The general user unit cannot install it at all. It requires the instrument manufacturer to come. Installation costs are high. And once the transformation is completed, the instrument is immobilized and its use is limited.
