一氯化硫在工农业生产中的用途很广。它是一氯醋酸生产中的良好触媒和脱水剂,它也是合成植物生长刺激素荼乙酸、除草剂2.4—D、345—T 以及其他有机化学产品的重要原料,而且它还是合成橡胶的硫化剂。过去我国所需要的一氯化硫是依赖进口。

二氯化二硫是一种黄红色液体，有刺激性、窒息性恶臭，在空气中强烈发烟。遇水分解为硫、二氧化硫、氯化氢。熔点－80℃，沸点135.6℃，密度1.678克/厘米3；加热300℃以上时分解为硫和氯。它易水解：
2S2Cl2+2H2O─→SO2+4HCl+3S
将干燥的氯气通入熔化的硫，主要生成二氯化二硫。二氯化二硫可做硫、碘和某些有机化合物及金属化合物的溶剂，也可做橡胶硫化剂。
